Industry News: Crunchyroll x Funimation June 2018 Release Slate

Yes in case you ask Re:ZERO is happening. But we also have some more interesting additions such as another Japanese live-action film, some new releases for the Berserk, Black Butler & My Hero Academia franchises and much more.

Prepare your wallets.

The June 2018 release slate features the following:
 - 7 Crunchyroll licensed anime titles

Grav's Thoughts:

An okay line-up to be honest. Nevertheless so here's a quick recap on what season they began airing:

On-Going Part Titles:
D.Gray-man (Part 4 of 4 from S3 to S4 as a whole)
Dragon Ball Super (Part 4 on-going)
My Hero Academia Season 2 (Part 2 of 2)

Spring 2016:
Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Part 1)

Winter 2017:
Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic

Spring 2017:
Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor
Berserk Season 2
Clockwork Planet
Kenka Bancho Otome -Girl Beats Boys-
The Royal Tutor
Sakura Quest (Part 1)
Seven Mortal Sins

So we have 3 instances of 'I fucking called it' moments with this line-up. Re:ZERO didn't really count as one since we weren't sure if they would release it either in June or later into the Summer. The dub was expected of course, because Anime Limited confirmed its existence back in December.

The first instance was As the Gods Will. I mentioned this in the previous release slate but basically I was aware of Funimation's involvement with the US distribution of the film a long time ago. They distributed it at festivals alongside Parasyte and we hadn't heard much since. My suspicions raised when Parasyte randomly got released in the May 2018 slate. On another note, I am rather happy to see it get released in the end. The As the Gods Will franchise has grabbed my interest for years.

The second instance is the Berserk 2017 release not getting a limited edition. Now while I have sadly missed out on the limited edition release of the 2016 adaptation I was rather cautious on how Funimation would handle the franchise. To recap, Tales of Zestiria the X got a limited edition for its first cour then got a standard only release for its second cour. Basically I figured they might pull that tactic again for Berserk and they did. It's a shitty move altogether but Funimation have been like that for god knows how long these days.

The third instance is My Hero Academia pretty much getting a limited edition for each cour. Now this is great for the fans of the franchise, but bloody hell this is overkill. Season 1 is out of print already so I expect these to sell also but there's a lot of useless tat with these sets no offence. Seriously a booklet and artcards would be enough to keep the fans happy. Oh, and have fun spending SRP $84.98 for each cour (which is currently at around 5 thanks to Season 3).

Now let's go through the other titles in the line-up. More Crunchyroll titles are in like Akashic Records which I enjoyed a lot more than others did, Seven Mortal Sins for research purposes (should be uncensored also), Clockwork Planet was re-scheduled for this month's slate, plus Kenka Bancho Otome and Royal Tutor also seeing a release. These lot were all dubbed during its simulcast run.

Sakura Quest I figured was a Funimation title all along given it was announced as a simuldub before Crunchyroll began their streaming announcements. I've heard its not as good as Shirobako though.

Meanwhile we have the Black Butler movie, the final cour of D.Gray-man prior to the HALLOW series, more Dragon Ball Super, and live-action Prison School series also seeing a release.

That's it for the month of June. Here are the list of remaining titles (with the Crunchyroll titles not-final but have been distributed in some form):
