Industry News: Aniplex of America Anime Boston 2016 Announcements

Well this past weekend had some interesting announcements from Crunchyroll (BERSERK!!) and Viz Media (One Piece Box 3!). Funimation had literally none but Aniplex of America surprised us with some more home release announcements!

Here's the list of titles Aniplex will be releasing over the course of the Summer 2016 season.

In total we have 3 shows getting domestic releases. There's also 1 film getting an import release in August which is for Persona 3 the Movie #4 -Winter of Rebirth-, but that was already announced about a few weeks prior to this moment. Other announcements unveiled early were Classmates (Doukyusei) getting a theatrical release as well as streaming acquisitions for The Asterisk War Season 2 and Haifuri.

First up we have the second season of Nisekoi. I originally thought that we may never see a release for this season since the time between the simulcast and now was longer than the way its first season was handled. Aniplex nowadays have a tendency to not bother with home releases for shows they feel don't do well in terms of legal streaming. Nevertheless Nisekoi: is now coming to Blu-ray and it's two sets with 6 episodes each instead of 5 episodes like Season 1. The downside is that the OVAs are once again not included this time around.

The second title is for Plastic Memories. A surprise in my opinion since I didn't think it would see a release from Aniplex but it appears that the show itself was rather popular during its simulcast so I guess that helped its chances of release. However it's a subtitle only release so you're out of luck if you wanted an English dub. The series has been licensed in the UK by Anime Limited so a cheaper option will be available.

The third and final new addition to the home release schedule is the third and final season of Wagnaria!!. I'm surprised by this one also. I didn't think Aniplex would actually release it since Mushi-Shi didn't even see a release despite it's popularity from the community. The sets do include the final 1 hour special so have no fear, however the first two seasons will be unobtainable (or close to) by the time this is now on the shelves because the license from NIS America is expiring.

That's it so far from Aniplex for the summer season. For the Autumn season I'm expecting some releases from the Monogatari franchise (most likely Owarimonogatari) and perhaps something from Charlotte since that was rather popular during its stream.
