Unboxing [US]: Expelled from Paradise - Limited Edition (Blu-ray)

Gen Urobuchi and Seiji Mizushima collaborate to bring out a CGI sci-fi film! The package took a while to arrive (Aniplex, what do you expect?) but it's finally here.

Expelled from Paradise, also known as Rakuen Tsuihou, is a science fiction computer generated dystopian film handled by Toei Animation with the Urobucher (known for his screenplays on various Nitroplus works) and Mizushima (directing the film, he worked on other anime titles including the original Fullmetal Alchemist and Mobile Suit Gundam 00) contributing to the piece. Although I have yet to see the film, it's caught my eye over the concept and the animation. CGI anime is not well known in the anime industry and there are only a few anime that gets this treatment, in fact it looks like it might be appearing more often with Polygon Pictures doing well for Knights of Sidonia (Ajin is their next adaptation). Expelled from Paradise looks great and it has Aniplex helping out so you'll know it's got quite a big budget. The film has sold surprisingly well on Blu-ray in Japan.

This release is from Aniplex of America and like many of us know already they are relatively expensive. However this particular Limited Edition is pretty damn cheap for Aniplex, only setting me back about £46 with P&P (thanks currency rate you're really helping) with a standard edition made available for much less. The limited edition set comes with an additional Blu-ray disc that contains a making of feature and trailers, as well as a booklet and postcard, all housed in a cardboard slipcase. Like the other Aniplex sets, the Blu-ray disc is region free. This film also comes with an English dub featuring popular voice actors like Steve Blum, Wendee Lee and Johnny Yong Bosh handling the main leads.

As pointed out by some folks in Anime UK News and Fandom Post, you can only switch subtitles on/off during playback and the audio options; English dub and Japanese audio are on different video streams.

With Earth now left in ruins following the "Nano Hazard," most of humanity has abandoned the planet they once called home along with their physical bodies and rebuilt their digitalized minds into a society within the cyber universe of "DEVA."

A.D. 2400, DEVA's central council detects an incident of unauthorized access into their mainframe. Someone on Earth was trying to hack into the system. The only information DEVA was able to retrieve was that the hacker referred to himself as "Frontier Setter."

To investigate the mysterious hacker's motives, the high officials of DEVA dispatch System Security Third Officer Angela Balzak to the Earth's surface. Equipped with a prosthetic "material body," Angela attempts to make contact with a local agent Dingo, but what awaited her instead was a swarm of Sandworms now infesting the Earth's surface. Angela intercepts the gruesome pests with her exoskeletal powered suit Arhan.
